Conservation Groups In Singapore
Some of the non-government organisations involved in reef conservation in Singapore include:
Blue
Water Volunteers

This group of active marine conservation volunteers was launched on 14 Feb 2004, and comprises returned members from the Singapore International Foundation Marine Conservation expeditions. BWV seeks to complement current research activities and increase awareness and understanding of local marine habitats such as coral reefs. Activities include Reefwalks, reef surveys and public talks. Contact:bluewatervolunteers@yahoo.com or visit the BWV website for more information. |
The Singapore Reef Survey and Conservation Committee (SRSCC)
Comprised representatives from Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, Singapore
Institute of Biology and Singapore Underwater Federation. Formed in 1988.
It launched the Reef Survey and Conservation Project
which involved the local diving community in surveying coral reefs from 1988-1989.
Singapore Reef and Marine Conservation Committee (SRMCC)
This committee evolved from the SRSCC in 1995 to include representatives
from Nature Society (Singapore) and Raffles Marina Pte Ltd. They aim to provide
more effective coordination of reef conservation efforts, and to combine resources
and develop a stronger role in forwarding recommendations to the government.
Nature Society (Singapore)
The society is active in educating the public through talks and publications,
such as the "Singapore Red Book" by Ng & Wee in 1994. They were
involved in the review of the 2001 Green Plan. NSS organised two major coral
translocation programmes involving volunteer divers in the 1990s. In 2003,
NSS published the coffee table book "Singapore Waters: Unveiling Our
Seas", about marine life in Singapore.
Singapore Environmental Council (SEC)
Previously known as the National Council on the Environment. Initiated a number
of projects aimed at increasing the awareness of school children on reef conservation
issues, including the "Reef Insights" programme. They launched the
"Singapore Green Map" listing the locations of Singapore's nature
areas, eco-friendly stores and recycling points. They were also involved in
the courtesy mooring buoy project together
with Raffles Marina, Singapore Underwater Federation and Shell Pte Ltd.
Singapore Underwater Federation (SUF)
The primary focus is on scuba activities. SUF has organised beach and
reef cleanups, and snorkelling programmes for schools. They were involved
with the deployment of mooring buoys at Pulau
Hantu. SUF is intensifying efforts towards reef conservation among the diving
community and public.
